Before photography, painting had the role of representing reality. But the arrival of photography turned the world of painting upside down. It loses its role of representing reality and must then reinvent itself, diversify or disappear. The conflict of drawing and color which dates back to the Italian Renaissance regains strength and asserts itself once again to remind us of what distinguishes painting from other arts.
Painting will subsequently become more and more autonomous and will further question the specificities of its medium. The links between painting and photography will always be very close, one borrowing from the other: the pictorial genres in photography and the visual qualities of the photo in painting, such as hyperrealism which will establish the photo itself as the subject of the painting.
