In 1967, after Garden Wall disbanded, Gabriel, Banks and Stewart were invited by bandmates Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford to work on a demo tape of songs. Gabriel and Banks wrote She is Beautiful together, their first collaboration. The tape was sent to Jonathan King, a former Charterhouse pupil turned musician, who was immediately enthusiastic, largely because of Gabriel’s voice.
