Rock ‘n’ roll (rock and roll, rock & roll, rock’n’roll or rock’n roll) is a popular musical genre that appeared in the United States in the late 1940s. It arises directly from musical styles such as such as gospel, blues, jazz, boogie woogie, jump blues, rhythm and blues and country music. While musical elements of what would become rock ‘n’ roll can be heard in blues records of the 1920s and country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until 1954.
