Gabriel, Banks and Stewart were invited by bandmates Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford to work on a demo tape of songs. Gabriel and Banks wrote She is Beautiful together, their first collaboration. The tape was sent to Jonathan King, a former Charterhouse pupil turned musician, who was immediately enthusiastic, largely because of Gabriel’s voice. Peter Gabriel signed the group and suggested a group name of Gabriel’s Angels, but which did not please the other members. They agree on King’s other suggestion, Genesis. After King suggested sticking to simpler pop, Gabriel and Banks wrote The Silent Sun as a pastiche of the Bee Gees, one of King’s favorite bands. This title became Genesis’ first single, released in 19681 and was included on the group’s first studio album, From Genesis to Peter Gabriel Roman Bath by Clive Arrowsmith
