Surya Mathew grew up between France and India, surrounded by his mother, a French painter, and his Indian father, a transmitter of yoga. From an early age, Surya had the opportunity to live inspired by what transcends the human being while cultivating his natural talent for creation through the various expressions of drawing, painting, jewelry and sewing. In parallel with his diploma from the Haute Ecole de Joaillerie de Paris, Surya followed the teachings of a master jeweler in Kerala, thus perpetuating the great Indian sacred tradition. Surya began his professional life by making unique pieces for the most prestigious houses of Place Vendôme.
Surya Mathew particularly draws his inspiration from astrology and planets, nature and birds, architecture and travels, marriage and sacred bonds, spirituality and positive human emotions. These worlds are for Surya as many fields of infinite explorations.
His dual culture, between the West and the Far East, gives birth to a rich, unique, luminous, light and colorful creation. Surya Mathew’s workshop is nestled in one of the historic hearts of Paris, near the rue Montorgueil and a stone’s throw from the Palais Royal, districts of Paris steeped in the history of fine jewelry, where famous names in this craftsmanship of art have lived and worked over the last centuries.
Surya Mathew’s workshop thus perpetuates a long ancestral tradition dating back to the first Egyptian Pharaohs who, by their influence, facilitated the development of remarkable goldsmith techniques, still used today. From the 3rd millennium BC, jewelry played a big role, often having a strong symbolic value, a spiritual dimension, and a protective power. Surya Mathew’s workshop preserves and still uses every day many tools bequeathed by former master jewelers, tools which highlight the nobility of manual work and the transmission between generations.
“From our exchange, a complicity is established, opening a space from which a sketch springs, giving the direction to inspire Surya to create a totally original piece of jewelry….”
Many families own jewelry that is rarely or never worn. Damaged, old-fashioned jewelry, even loaded with a heavy history, there are many reasons that lead to abandonment at the bottom of a drawer. House of Surya Mathew proposes to give a new life to these dormant pieces either by repairing them, or by embellishing them, or by reusing raw materials and stones to nourish new original creations.
Entrusting your jewelry to Surya Mathew means sharing your story, to give meaning to the transmission…
This artistic pragmatic approach, anchored in kindness, seeks to reconcile human activities with a responsible impact on our planet, respectful of all its living beings as well as future generations.
