Bali

This photographic ode to Bali in the Age of Covid is an example of how great things can be born out of bad circumstances. During his return visit to the island at the beginning of 2020, French photographer Stephane Sensey, suddenly found himself ‘frozen’ on the island as the world shut down in reaction to the pandemic. Rather than bemoan his inability to travel further afield, Stephane Sensey instead chooses to head off to the less frequently visited areas of west and north Bali, where he stayed in Munduk, an old village of plantations located in the hills overlooking the north coast, and the area of Sumberkima and Pemuteran home of the ancient temple Pura Pulaki.

The island was one of the most photographed destinations on earth from Instagrammers to professional photographers. In recent years most publications seemed busier trying to recreate a romantic image that dwelled in the past, not today, an aim that clashed with his own sense of being real. His attitude would change quickly. As the tide of tourism retreated and was not replenished, Sensey saw and felt a part of Bali where the traditional way of life culture, customs and an open welcoming atmosphere still exists enthused he embarked on an ambitious schedule making the some hundred and fifty photographs seen here.
